USING FTP (File Transfer
Protocol)
The two most common forms of
FTP software at SAU are WS_FTP (for PCs) and Fetch (for MAC).
What is Fetch?
Fetch is a MAC-based
application for transferring files between your MAC (the local system) and a
remote system. Using Fetch, you can
connect to another system from your MAC, browse directories and files on both
systems, and transfer files between the systems.
The following instructions
explain the use of Fetch
Click on Applications/Fetch/Fetch 2.1.2
Fill out the following
fields:
Host: ftp.sau.edu
User ID: Anonymous
Password: (leave
blank)
Anonymous users will only
be able to add files, read files, download files, and make directories in the
shared folder. You will not be able to
delete files or folders at any time.
The “private” folder
is for instructor use only. Students
will not have access or rights to view
anything in this folder.
The “pub” folder is
used by Information Technology for shared software.
The “shared” folder
is where students will be able to add, read, and download any files that are
placed there.
Selecting Directories to Put a File to:
You can change directories
in several ways. Double-clicking the
name of a directory in the file list causes Fetch to enter that directory. Choosing the Change Directory… command
from the Directories menu prompts you for a directory name and makes
that the current directory.
Putting a File:
To
transfer a file from your MAC to another machine.
You will be asked to pick a
file and prompted for the name and format to give the file you are
putting. You should choose MacBinary
ll format if you plan to simply store the file on the other machine, BinHex if
you plan to mail it to someone, and either Text, Wrapped Text, or Raw Data if
you plan to manipulate the file on the computer.
Getting a File:
From any Internet-connected
computer, open a web browser, such as Internet
Explorer or Netscape.
In the Address line (Internet Explorer) or Go To line (Netscape), type:
ftp.sau.edu and press Enter.
NOTE: Do not type “www” before
this address.
The SAU FTP site will appear
and be available for read-only use.
