The two most common forms of FTP software at SAU are WS_FTP (for PCs) and Fetch (for MAC).

The following instructions explain the use of WS_FTP95 LE.

The following screen appears.

Fill out the following fields:

            Host Name/Address:  ftp.sau.edu

User ID:  (ambrose/username (Your assigned user id))

            Password:  (Your assigned password)

Click OK and the following screen will appear:

Your local computer files will appear on the left side of the screen and the available ftp folders will appear on the right side.

The “private” folder is for your personal use only.  Students will not have access or rights to view anything in this folder.

The “pub” folder is used by Academic Computing for shared software.

The “shared” folder is where students will be able to add, read, and download any files that are placed there.

What is WS_FTP?

WS_FTP is a Windows-based application for transferring files between your PC (the local system) and a remote system.  Using WS_FTP, you can connect to another system from your PC, browse directories and files on both systems, and transfer files between the systems.

Selecting Directories and Files:

To select a directory or file in the current directory, click on the directory or file name in the local or remote system's window.

To select multiple files or directories:

If the files or directories are contiguous in the window, click on the first file to be selected, and then press and hold Shift and click on the last file to be selected.

If the files or directories are not contiguous, click on the first file to be selected, and then press and hold Ctrl and click on any other files you want to select.

To unselect all directories and files, click the Refresh button.

 Transferring Files or Directories:

  1. Select the files or directories on the local system (left side of the screen).
  2. Open the directory to which you want to transfer files on the remote system (right side of the screen).
  3. Transfer the files using the left and right arrow buttons located between the local and remote systems.

Click on the left arrow button to transfer files from the remote to the local system.

Click on the right arrow button to transfer files from the local to the remote system.

Creating and Removing Directories:

To Create a Directory:

Click the MkDir button.  You are prompted for a directory name.

To Remove a Directory:

Select the directory and click the Delete button.

Changing Directories:

To change directories, click on the green upward arrow at the top of the window in either the remote or local system.

Creating a Link to the FTP Server From Your Web Page:

This is the basic site hyperlink address:

ftp://ftp.sau.edu

To create a link that would send your students directly to a specific folder, use this hyperlink address (using your personal user name and class name):

ftp://ftp.sau.edu/shared/user name/class name

Exiting WS_FTP:

Click on the Exit button in the lower right-hand corner.

Accessing the FTP Server for Read-Only Purposes:

From any Internet-connected computer, open a web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape.

In the Address line (Internet Explorer) or Go To line (Netscape), type:   ftp.sau.edu and press Enter.  NOTE:  Do not type “www” before this address.

The SAU FTP site will appear and be available for read-only use.

Click on the Shared Folder
