Servicing Student-Owned Personal Computer and
Peripherals Policy

St. Ambrose University (SAU) provides students
with the option of connecting to the Internet
and University network in two ways: dial-up
over a telephone line or a direct Ethernet
connection. Dial-up over a telephone line
requires a modem (internal or external). The
direct Ethernet connection requires registering
your computer. (found on
the Information Technology web page, http://infotech.sau.edu/studentnet),
and an Ethernet card.
While the SAU IT Department provides several
levels of network connection service to
students, the IT Department is not bonded or
insured for damage or property loss resulting
from assistance or service performed on property
owned by a student. The IT Department
personnel are certified / trained exclusively in
maintaining equipment, computers and peripherals
owned by the University. Due to liability
issues, it is the policy of SAU that the personnel of
the IT Department can not provide physical assistance on
installing an Ethernet card in a student-owned
personal computer. The IT Department may provide instructions and configuration
assistance on connecting to the University
network and on installing the required modem for
a dial-up connection. All other services on
student-owned personal computers and peripherals
are to be handled by the student.
Students are free to make arrangements to form a
contract with SAU personnel to support personal
computers and peripherals at their own cost and
on non-University time. These services will be
provided separate from University support and
liability. The University will not be held
liable for any activities performed by its
employees on non-University property.
